How to Build a Closet System

A closet system or closet organizer can help you to maximize space in a small or large closet. Fortunately, this is a very workable do-it-yourself weekend project with only minimal tool skills and a visit to your local home improvement center. Customize your closet system to meet your specific needs and enjoy the space you will free up in your home with better, tidier storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Empty and measure your closet. You will need width, height and depth measurements for the area in which you intend to install the closet organizer. If you are working with a walk-in closet, get the dimensions of the spaces you intend to organize.

    • 2

Assess your needs. Most clothes closets will work best with a low and high hanging rod, some space for baskets or drawers, shoe and accessory storage and a hanging area for longer garments. You may want to measure various elements of your wardrobe to be certain that you allow enough space.

    • 3

Sketch out a closet design for your closet system or use the design tools at ClosetMaid (see Resources). Take your design along when you shop for the parts for your closet system. Make sure you also take along your measurements.

    • 4

Decide which type of closet system you prefer. Most home improvement centers offer wood, laminate and coated wire options. Coated wire is the least expensive and wood the most costly for closet organizers. Choose the largest elements of your closet system, like drawers or shelves, first.

    • 5

Measure each piece carefully before cutting. Wooden rods can be cut with a handsaw, but coated wire elements will require a hacksaw. Once each rod is cut to fit, carefully install all supports in your closet system. Use drywall anchors, if needed, to secure each piece.

    • 6

Take the opportunity to purge unneeded items before you put everything back in your new closet organizer. Use your space well and consider new hangers and drawer organizers to complete your closet system.

Tips & Warnings

  • Predesigned closet systems work very well for smaller closets and are quite affordable.

  • Make sure you install all rods and weight-supporting elements according to manufacturer's directions.
