How to Update Java for Windows XP
Java is a computer programming language that allows the user to do everything from view images to play games online. It's necessary to have Java installed to see many websites properly. When a new version of Java is available, the user will be prompted (usually when visiting a website that uses Java). To update Java if you're running Windows XP, the new version needs to be installed.

Use an Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, AOL) to connect to the Java website at Java.com. Click on the download at the top of the page.

Click "Install" when prompted. If the Install prompt does not appear, go to the manual install page at java.com/en/download/manual.jsp. View the license agreement and click "Accept" to start the install.

Check the box to install the Yahoo! Toolbar for Firefox/Mozilla if desired. The toolbar allows you to search from any program in your computer without going into the browser. If the toolbar is not wanted, uncheck the box next to the description. Click "Next."

Watch the installation complete as the installer extracts the files and installs them. The program is then registered. When the message comes up that Java has been successfully installed, click "Finish."

Exit out of the browser. Restart the browser. Begin using Java the next time you visit a website.

Tips & Warnings
If there are any problems with the installation or if there is a message in the browser that Java still needs to be installed, visit the Help Center, located at the top of the Java website.
Java runs in the background of the computer and you will not "see" that it is running. It just makes programs run more smoothly.
