Get some driving experience. If you are younger than 18, you must take an approved driver's education course before receiving your Illinois driver's license. If you are older than 18, then this requirement does not apply.

Gather pertinent documents. You must provide documents that verify your identity and residency. Some acceptable documents include a Social Security card and utility bill. In addition, you must provide verification of your signature. According to DMV.org, acceptable proof of your signature, includes, "a canceled check, major credit card, passport, mortgage agreement or other acceptable documentation."

Take the vision screening. You must meet minimum vision requirements to receive your Illinois driver's license. According to Cyber Drive Illinois, "The minimum requirement for visual acuity is 20/40 acuity with or without corrective lenses. Drivers with acuity between 20/41 and 20/70 are limited to daylight driving only."

Take the written test. Some of the subjects covered on the written test include traffic signals, pavement markings and the basic road rules. In addition, drivers must take the written test every eight years unless they have maintained a flawless driving record with no driving convictions. If you fail the written test, you can take the test up to three times in one year.

Take the driving test. If you already have an out-of-state driver's license, then you do not have to take the driving test. On the other hand, if this is your first time ever applying for a driver's license or you are older than 75, you must take the driving test. In addition, if you have any accidents on your driving record, then you will also be required to take the driving test.

Receive your driver's license. As of 2009, the fee for a Illinois driver's license is $5 for drivers ages 18 to 20 and $21 for drivers ages 21 to 68. Your Illinois driver's license will be valid for four years.
