Things You'll Need:
- Fabric scraps
- Batting scrap
- Sewing thread
- Quilting thread
- Straight pins
- Needle
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
-
Step 1
Decide what fabrics to use. Most quilters have a large amount of scrap fabrics and quilt batting from other projects. Choose an outside decorator fabric and a plain or coordinating inside fabric, a piece of muslin, sewing thread to match, quilting thread and a piece of batting.
-
Step 2
Cut three rectangles from the decorator fabric, muslin and inside fabric. They should be 4-inches wide and 8-inches long. Cut a piece of quilt batting the same size.
-
Step 3
Sandwich (layer) the decorator fabric (face down), the batting and the muslin. Baste (use large running stitches) across the center and up-and-down lengthwise, to keep all three layers in place. For the moment, leave the inside plain fabric aside.
-
Step 4
Quilt by hand or by machine, with quilting thread, over the top of the decorator fabric, through all three layers. An easy way to hand quilt is to stitch around the design on the fabric. When the quilting is completed, remove the basting stitches and set this piece aside.
-
Step 5
Cut three additional pieces of the inside fabric. The first is cut 3½-inches long and 4-inches wide. The second is cut 3-inches long and 4-inches wide. The last piece is cut 2½-inches long and 4-inches wide.
-
Step 6
Press under ¼-inch at one end of each of the additional pieces of fabric. Sew across each piece close to the pressed edge.
-
Step 7
Layer the additional pieces on top of the inside fabric. At the bottom of the fabric, place the longest piece, then the middle and finally the shortest at the bottom. This should crate a cascading effect of pockets. Pin them in place, with all fabrics right-side-up. Sew around the pockets at both sides and the bottom with a ¼-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins.
-
Step 8
Place the inside fabric on top of the quilted piece, right-sides-together. Pin, matching all sides. Sew, with a ¼-inch seam allowance around the outsides, leaving a 3-inch opening on one side. Remove the pins. Turn the quilted credit card holder right side out through the opening.
-
Step 9
Hand sew the opening shut, with a running stitch.
-
Step 10
Locate the center of the credit card holder, across. On the sewing machine, stitch across, ¼-inch on each side of the center. This will help the holder to fold in half.
