How to Set Up a Woodworking Shop in the Garage

Woodworking is a hobby that many do simply for the pleasure it brings. Others do it to earn a living. It's also something you can practice at whatever level you choose with minimal tools or a workshop. A spare garage might be the ideal place to set up a woodworking shop---you can accomplish the job gradually, adding to it as finances and time allow.

Build a table, or purchase one, that runs the length of one wall. This will be your primary work space. You want it to be long and wide enough to hold several projects at a time or to allow you plenty of space if you're working on a project that has several pieces and requires several operations. Use the space beneath the table to store larger tools.

Attach a portable wood lathe to one end of the table. Wood lathes are machines capable of cutting, drilling, sanding and even etching wood pieces. A wood lathe is a valuable, time-saving addition to any woodworking shop. Since you're setting up in a garage, a portable wood lathe will save space and still provide all the useful features and functionality. You can purchase a portable wood lathe at many home improvement shops or at woodworking shops online (see Resources).

Hang peg board on the wall above your table. Peg boards are a good place to store frequently used tools and keep them out of the way at the same time. Consider hanging cork board on the wall above your work table where you can hang blueprints for your projects and have them where they can be seen easily.

Purchase a sturdy tool chest with drawers for your smaller tools. Devote one of the drawers to paper and pencils for sketching ideas.

Be sure the garage is well ventilated. This is important for working with and storing the varnishes and paints you'll be using frequently.
