Protect your table and countertop from hot pots and bowls with a crocheted pot holder. These pot holders are thick and textured and work great. Using a rainbow of colors, make homemade crocheted pot holders a pretty as well as practical addition to kitchen. Scrap yarn is excellent for pot holders, as you only use a small amount of each color.

Chain 2, then make a double crochet in the next 2 stitches. In the next 2 stitches make a front post double crochet (fpdc). This means to drop down to the previous row and make a double crochet. Alternate these 4 stitches all the way across. In the last stitch make a half double crochet. Turn.

  3. Step 3
    Half Double Crochet

    Half Double Crochet

Chain 2 and make a fpdc in the next 2 stitches, then a double crochet in the next 2 stitches. Repeat these 4 stitches all the way across. Another half double crochet in the last stitch. Turn your work.

  4. Step 4

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you finish 14 rows.

  5. Step 5

Repeat step 3 for the 15th row. Do not turn your work. Place 3 single stitches in the corner. Continue down the side with single stitches. Chain 1 and place 3 single crochet stitches in the next corner and single stitches down the next side. Again, 3 single stitches in the corner. Repeat this for all 4 sides. Fasten off your work.

  6. Directions for Second Side

  7. Step 1

Putting 2 sides together makes the pot holder doubly thick to hold the heat. Repeat all steps of the first side.

  8. Step 2

Join the 2 sides together with the smaller hook. Match the corner stitches together of each side. Make a slip stitch to join together. Chain 5. Skip the next stitch and place a slip stitch in the next stitch. Chain 5 again. Repeat all the way around the edges and join with a slip stitch into the beginning slip stitch. Fasten off and leave a 15 inch length of yarn.

  9. Step 3

Place a slip stitch in the corner again. Chain 5. Next, place a single crochet in the stitch just before the chain 5 stitches in the previous row. Repeat this all the way around. Once again, fasten your work off and leave a 15 inch length of yarn.

  10. Step 4

Tie a knot in the end of the two 15 inch lengths. This is the hook from which you can hang your potholders.
