Improve your home the inexpensive way!
Improve your home the inexpensive way!

Whether you're thinking about selling your home or just want to make it nicer for you and your family--there are a number of things you can do to make it a more attractive and appealing place. Depending on your personal skill set you can do most of them yourself--and there are always alternatives for the things you don't want to do yourself. Here's how you can inexpensively improve your home's appearance.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint
  • Light fixtures
  • Faucets
  • Carpet cleaner
  • Toilet seat
  1. Step 1

Start with your kitchen. Sure, new counters and cabinets will improve it, but they cost a lot of money. Alternatively, you could change the doors on your cabinets or even just the handles or knobs

  2. Step 2

Brighten up old wooden (or even laminate) cabinets with a fresh coat of paint on the doors. Give the ceiling and walls a new coat of paint, and your kitchen will be brighter and fresher for just a few extra dollars.

  3. Step 3

Think about changing your light fixtures. Light fixtures (like everything else) are only in style for a while and then something new comes along. New, modern light fixtures are readily available at home and department stores as well as lighting specialty stores.

  4. Step 4

Installing new carpet is expensive; however, you can rent a carpet cleaner inexpensively at many home and even grocery stores. Clean, fresh carpet is a great way to improve the appearance of your home.

  5. Step 5

Replace your kitchen and bathroom taps; this is a relatively inexpensive way to modernize and improve the appearance of your home.

  6. Step 6

Consider your toilet seat. Yes, even toilet seats can go out of style (or become a potential hazard) and a new toilet seat can cost as little as $20. Combine with new lighting fixtures and new taps, and you'll think you have a new bathroom.

  7. Step 7

Change your curtains or blinds to give your home an improved appearance both inside and out. Old faded curtains give a home a rundown appearance that no one likes--so why settle for them when ready-made curtains and blinds are inexpensively available?

  8. Step 8

Think about installing some window boxes to plant fresh flowers during the spring and summer. Even if you don't have room for a "real" garden, you and others can enjoy the beauty of bright, fresh flowers.

Tips & Warnings
  • A fresh coat of paint can enhance any room.
  • Lighting fixtures and kitchen/bathroom faucets are often on sale; if you watch the flyers you should be able to get new ones for both your kitchen and bathroom at a reasonable price. Take some time to shop and see what you like and then wait for the fixtures to go on sale.
  • If changing lighting fixtures and faucets is more than you want to take on, consider hiring a home handyman. Many handy people are turning their skills into a second income, and they certainly won't charge you as much as a certified tradesman.
  • Be sure to get (and check) some references before bringing anyone into your home to do work.
