How to Download a Picture From the Internet

If you've ever gone to a Web site and found a picture you would love to have for a graphic, there's a way to grab it. You can save it and put it in your own files or Web pages.

        Go to a Web site.

        Let the whole page load.

        Scroll to the picture you want.

        Point the mouse arrow on the picture.

        For PC users, right-click on the picture so that a menu appears. For Mac users, press and hold down the mouse button to see the menu.

        Choose "Save picture as" if you're using Internet Explorer, or choose "Save image as" if you're using Netscape Navigator.

        Select the name that's in the "File name" box, and type in the name you would like to give the picture.

        Click the down arrow to the right of the "Save as type" box.

        Pick a format to save the picture as.

        Click once on the folder you want to save it in.

        Click the button to the right of the "File name" box. Depending on your browser, it's either called Save or Open.

    Tips & Warnings

    • This will work on most sites, but sometimes the pictures are protected and they can't be saved.

    • If the picture is a thumbnail version (in other words, very small), click on it once to get the larger version before you save it.

    • If you want to send the picture via e-mail, save it in JPEG format, because this format downloads faster and takes up less space on your hard drive.

    • Most sites will tell you not to save their pictures for commercial use.

    • If you use a picture from another site on your Web site, the owners of the site usually like credit or a link to their page for it. Be sure to ask for permission before you use another person's image on the Web, because you could be violating the creator's copyright.

    • If you would rather save the pictures on a floppy disk instead of on your hard drive, make sure the "Save in" box says "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)."
