How to run a BIOS update from a USB drive

A computer's BIOS depending on the manufacturer of the computer or motherboard may have an update that can be applied. A computer's BIOS or Basic Input/Output System is typically stored on a Flash memory chip that sits on the motherboard. When the BIOS is updated it is referred to as flashing the BIOS because the process is replacing the memory on the chip. Updating the BIOS can be done run from a Flash drive if an update needs to be done on a computer that cannot access the internet.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Obtain the BIOS update from the computer or motherboard manufacturer. Go to their website and find their software/drivers update page to see if there is an update for the BIOS.

  2. Step 2

    Download the BIOS update file and save it to a folder the computer. The easiest place to place the file is on the desktop.

  3. Step 3

    Copy the file on the desktop to your USB drive. Right click on the file and select copy from the context menu.

  4. Step 4

    Open My Computer by double clicking the icon on the desktop. Double click on the drive letter for your USB drive.

  5. Step 5

    Paste the file on the USB drive. Right click anywhere and select paste from the context menu. The file should now reside on your Flash drive.

  6. Step 6

    Run the file on the computer that needs to have the BIOS updated. Double click on the file from the USB drive to start the updating process.

Tips & Warnings
  • BIOS updates can be downloaded as executables that can run directly from Windows.
  • If the update for the BIOS fails the computer will fail to start.
