How to Load a Pontoon Boat

There are a number of reasons for removing your pontoon boat from the water. Perhaps the open-water season is over and it is time to put the boat into storage for the winter, or maybe the boat needs repair and you have to take it to the shop. Whatever the reason for taking it out of the water, you need to know how to load a pontoon boat onto a trailer.

Instructions

    • 1

The person driving the tow vehicle should back the trailer down the boat ramp. Make sure all wiring is unplugged before backing the trailer into the water.

    • 2

The person driving the pontoon should line the boat up with the trailer and drive toward it. Trim the pontoon motor up as you approach the trailer.

    • 3

Slowly drive the pontoon onto the trailer. Ensure the raised middle portion of the trailer is between the two pontoon floats.

    • 4

Attach the cable from the trailer to the front of the pontoon. Use the trailer winch and crank the pontoon ahead as far as it will go. Then attach the chain from the trailer to the front of the pontoon. Strap the back of the pontoon onto the trailer.

    • 5

Trim the motor up as far as it will go, then shut off the engine.

    • 6

Pull the pontoon out of the water and re-attach all trailer wires before beginning to tow the pontoon.

Tips & Warnings

  • If possible, find a calm boat ramp at which to load the pontoon. This will make the process easier. Use two extra straps to strap the pontoon onto the trailer. This will prevent it from bouncing as it is towed.
