Before you can receive your driver's license, you will have to obtain a learner's permit through your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. Each state has different requirements for getting a driving learner's permit, but there are some similar guidelines in most states. After a provisional period with your learner's permit, you will be eligible to take the examination to get your driver's license.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit the local DMV office. They can provide you with a copy of the requirements to apply for a driving learner's permit. You can also check online for information about permit regulations. For instance, Glencoe Online has links to each state's DMV website. DMV.org also has state-specific driver permit information.

  2. Step 2

Check the age guidelines. Generally, applicants must be at least 15 ½ to 18 to get a learner's permit. In most states, you will need to prove that you have completed or are enrolled in a driving instruction program. In some states, if you are over the age of 17, you do not need to be enrolled in an instruction program as long as you have a person over the age of 25 driving with you at all times.

  3. Step 3

Fill out the required form from the DMV to get your learner's permit. As a minor, you will need a parent or guardian to sign the application form. You must pay any fees associated with the permit and will need to bring several forms of identification that prove your age and identity.

  4. Step 4

You must also take and pass a vision test. Before a driving permit is administered, the DMV will give each applicant a short eye exam.

  5. Step 5

Complete a written exam to get your driver's permit. You must pass a multiple-choice exam, made up of about 50 questions. The questions will relate to traffic laws and signage. As long as you pass, you will be able to get your permit. If you fail, you will have to wait a set period of time before you can take a retest.
