How to Change the Power Steering Fluid on a Ford Windstar

This is usually referred to as flushing the power steering fluid, and it can be expensive to have a professional do it. Instructions

    • 1

Pop the hood and locate the power steering fluid reservoir. It should be in the back left corner of the engine, on the passenger side.

    • 2

Detach the return hose from the upper part of the reservoir.

    • 3

Take the return hose and connect another hose to it.

    • 4

Place the hose in a container large enough to collect the old power steering fluid.

    • 5

Turn the engine on. Let it idle.

    • 6

Move the steering wheel from side-to-side to the lock position. Keep going until all the fluid has finished moving into the container.

    • 7

Turn off the engine and empty the container.

    • 8

Put the return hose back on the reservoir.

    • 9

Fill the reservoir with new power steering fluid. Do not fill above the upper level line.

    • 10

Repeat steps 5 and 6 to get any air out of the system.

    • 11

Re-check the fluid level and add more fluid if it is not filled to the upper level line.
