How to Find Deleted Search History

Some people believe that erasing their search history covers up their activities perfectly. Others believe it obscures the data so thoroughly, you would need to be a computer programmer to find out what they are hiding. Neither is even close to the truth and finding the deleted history of a Windows-based computer can be done by anyone with an Internet connection and a little bit of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the search. Click "Start" and search in "Files and Folders" for ".dat" files. Limit your search to the C: (or other) hard drive. The search may take a while.

    • 2

Capture the list. There should be a list of files with the extension ".DAT."

    • 3

Copy and paste these to "Notebook" or print them using the "Print screen" button.

    • 4

Download the reader. Find a safe ".DAT" reader program (see Resources) and download it. Run its installation and have it look at the files you found. This will reveal the information someone wanted to hide from you.

Tips & Warnings

  • It may also be possible to use "System Restore" to see the deleted history, but this will reveal your investigation or may return the computer to a much, much earlier state, so extreme caution is advised.
