How to Make Quilted Tea Cups

If you have a long distance friend with whom you would love to share a cup of tea, these cute little quilted teacups are a wonderful gift to insert in a greeting card. They are made up of pre-quilted fabric and require very few supplies to create. They are an economical craft and gift and would make a fun project for a group of friends to do together. Make up several to have as a quick little gift on hand or fill a basket with them for your next craft show.

Things You'll Need

  • Light weight cardboard
  • Ruler
  • Compass
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Disappearing fabric pin
  • Small amounts pre-quilted fabric
  • Pinking shears
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Rick rack
  • Small doily or bit of lace
  • Old button
  • Craft glue
  • Teabag

      This is your teacup pattern: Trace a 3 inch square on the light weight cardboard. Measure 1 inch from two corners on one side. Round the corners matching the 1 inch marks. Cut out the shape.
      This is your teacup handle pattern: Using the compass, draw a 1-1/4 inch circle on the lightweight cardboard and then cut it out.

      Double the quilted fabric with the wrong sides together. Place the teacup pattern on the quilted fabric. Trace around the pattern with the disappearing fabric pen. Pin the layers together and cut out using the pinking shears. Place the teacup handle pattern on the quilted fabric. Trace around the pattern with the disappearing fabric pen. Cut out the handle from one layer of quilted fabric using the pinking shears.

      Top stitch rick rack 1/4 inch from the top edge of one fabric teacup side on the right side of the fabric. Top stitch rick rack 1/4 inch from the edge of the teacup handle. Place the teacup sides together with the wrong sides facing each other and pin. Insert the circle handle between the teacup sides 1/2 inch and 1/2 inch below the top of the teacup top brim and pin. Starting at the brim of one side of the teacup, top stitch rick rack 1/4 inch from the edge around the cup. This will also attach the handle as you sew.

      Cut a small doily or bit of lace to fit within the sewn rick rack on the front of the teacup. Apply a thin layer of craft glue to the wrong side of the doily or lace. Press the doily or lace to the center of the teacup. Apply craft glue to the back of an old button and center it on the doily or lace. Allow the glue to dry. Insert the tea bag in the top of the quilted tea cup.
