Design a Truck Stop Restaurant

Truck stops, or travel plazas, are places to fill up with gas, clean up, shop and eat. Truck stop food is usually hearty, and breakfast is generally served all day. Clean restrooms, an endless supply of coffee and a quick meal go a long way to satisfy patrons. Design a truck stop restaurant with the needs of long-distance travelers in mind.

Instructions

    • 1

Build comfortable booths. Put a telephone and Internet connection in each booth. Install an electrical outlet for charging cell phones and laptop computers.

    • 2

Brew complimentary coffee and iced tea in a self-serve area. Keep it well stocked with clean cups, glasses and flatware. Set up sugar, sweeteners, creamer and lemon slices. Supply to-go cups and lids.

    • 3

Set up a buffet and salad bar in the center of the room. Leave enough space for multiple customers to fill their plates at the same time.

    • 4

Put in lots of windows to make the space bright and airy. Hang shades or blinds for hours when the sun shines directly into the room. Install bright lighting, and paint the walls a light-colored paint.

    • 5

Install utilitarian tile or laminate floors that can easily be cleaned.

    • 6

Create a well-ventilated smoking area that's separate from the dining room. Make sure that smokers have easy access to the buffet.

    • 7

Hang a flat panel television on the wall so that truckers and patrons can keep an eye on the news and weather.

    • 8

Set up a small convenience store at the checkout so patrons can buy a pack of gum or breath mints when they pay their bill.
