How to Obtain a Birth Certificate Overseas

The nearest U.S. Consular office should be notified as soon as possible after the overseas birth of a child to U.S. citizens. The certificate, termed a Consular Report of Birth, is an official document proving U.S. citizenship.

      Collect the official record of the child's birth overseas.

      Collect documents proving the parents' citizenship. This document could be one of the following: a U.S. passport, birth certificate or Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship.

      Collect a marriage certificate to prove the parents are married.

      Collect documents proving the parent(s') residence in the United States.

      Take these documents to the nearest U.S. consular office.

    • 6

      Pay the $65 processing fee. You will receive a Consular Report of Birth, also known as an FS-240, shortly thereafter.

Tips & Warnings

  • Parents may have to provide additional documents, including divorce decrees or affidavits of paternity. All documents provided must be the original certified copy.
