Look at the reviews for the different types of diapers as well as the brands. This will help a lot and moms tend to be very honest about what they do and don't like! You can find a lot of reviews at the website listed in step #1.

Ask yourself some simple questions that will narrow down the choices. Here are some questions for you to think about...
Do you want to buy one set of diapers and be done (one size diapers) or do you want to buy 3 different sizes (pocket fitted diapers in small, medium and large)?
All cloth diapers tend to be bulkier than disposables. But, do you care how bulky they are? This will weigh into your decision since some inserts (for pocket diapers) are bigger than others.
How much are you willing to spend? Prefolds are the cheapest. These can be used the "old fashioned" with pins and all, or you can get diaper covers that just use Velcro to stay on.
How often do you want to change the diaper? How absorbent is the diaper and how often does the manufacturer say they should be changed?
Do you want the diaper to close with snaps or Velcro (if going that route)? Both are available.
Do you care what the diapers look like? Are you going for practicality only or for a cute look as well?
Do you need them to dry quickly (like if you hang them out to dry)? Then you may not want an AIO that takes a bit longer.
