You cram your feet into shoes for the better part of the day, trapping sweat and bacteria in both your shoes and socks. More often than not, what results is a less-than-pleasant odor coming from your feet. No need to suffer from the embarrassment of stinky feet -- instead, make time for some tootsie TLC to nix the smell.
Stop the Stench
Sprinkle baking soda or talcum powder into your socks before putting them on to help absorb moisture and odor. A foot soak also helps to remove the smell. Soak your feet for about 15 minutes a couple of times a day in a mixture of white vinegar and water or saltwater to reduce bacteria. Alternatively, boil 3 cups of water and steep two black tea bags for 15 minutes. Pour the tea into a basin and add some cool water to bring down the temperature. Soak your feet daily for 30 minutes. After drying your feet thoroughly -- whether after a foot soak or shower -- rub hand sanitizer on them to keep odor-causing bacteria at bay.
Wearing shoes and socks can lead to sweating, which in turn makes your feet stink. Wear sandals in the warmer months to allow your feet to breathe. When wearing shoes that cover your entire foot, invest in moisture-wicking socks that draw the wetness from the skin. Toss an extra pair of socks into your bag and change them midway through the day, and give your kicks a break every couple of days. Wearing the same shoes several days in a row causes moisture and bacteria to accumulate in the fabric, and the smell then transfers to your feet. Let them air out for a day or two before wearing them again.
