Tax preparers must have a special identification number from the IRS.

Professional tax preparers must obtain from the Internal Revenue Service a tax preparer identification number, or PTIN, and renew it each year. This requirement went into effect in 2011 for anyone who receives compensation for preparing a return. Unlike other IRS identification numbers, there is a fee to get a PTIN. Apply and pay online or mail in the application with a check.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the necessary information to apply for a PTIN, including your Social Security number, address, telephone number and date of birth. Individuals must also supply information from their personal income tax return for the previous year, as well as any professional certification information. Convicted felons and those who owe back income taxes must provide details of these circumstances on the application.

    • 2

Complete the PTIN application online and receive your PTIN in as little as 15 minutes. To file your application manually, complete IRS Form W-12 "IRS Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) Application" and send it to the PTIN Processing Center. Allow four to six weeks for processing.

    • 3

Pay the initial PTIN fee. Preparers who create a new PTIN account and number must pay an application fee of $64.25, as of the time of publication. Online users can pay via credit card or direct debit. Manual filers can send a check or money order with the paper application.

Tips & Warnings

  • Enrolled agents can obtain a PTIN for a reduced fee of $30.

  • Tax professionals who had a PTIN before September 28, 2010, and did not renew it, must obtain a new PTIN.

  • PTIN applicants must be at least 18 years old.
