How to Make an International Call to the US
While you are enjoying the warm beaches of the Caribbean, touring the ancient monuments of Greece or even traveling on business, you may want to make an international call to the United States. The steps you follow vary depending on where you are, but making an international call to the Unites States is easy if you have the correct dialing codes. A little advance preparation will keep charges to a minimum and help you call at a convenient time.

Find out if the country you are visiting is a member of the North American Numbering Plan, or NANP. This is an integrated system that simplifies international calls among the member countries. Member nations include Canada, U.S. Pacific territories such as Guam and American Samoa, and several Caribbean countries. Use the link below to see a complete list of NANP member countries.

See what time it is in the U.S. city you are calling. It's easy to forget about the time differences, especially if you are on a long trip, but if you are in the Philippines and call someone in New York at 3 in the afternoon, you're going to wake him up at 3 a.m. his time.

Place an international call to the United States from a NANP member country exactly as you would make a long-distance call inside the United States. Just dial 1, the area code and the phone number you wish to call.

If you are in a non-NANP member country, dial the code to access the international phone system. Usually this is 00, but not always. For instance, in Russia you dial 8, wait for a dial tone, then dial 10. Once you have accessed the system, dial 1, the area code and the phone number.

Save money by getting a discount calling package before you begin your trip. Check with your regular phone service provider first, as many offer discount international calling plans. If you are likely to make a lot of calls, consider buying a bulk lot from a discount provider such as PennyTalk.com or Pingo.com. It also helps if you call on the weekend or in the evening, time differences permitting.
