How to Install Windows Defender XP
Windows Defender comes packaged with Windows Vista as the operating system's main security hub for combating spyware. An XP-compatible version is also supported, and can be downloaded for free by anyone running a genuine copy of Windows XP.

Open your web browser and navigate to the Windows Defender download page (see Resources).

Press the big "continue" button to let Microsoft check to see if you're running a genuine (i.e., not pirated) copy of Windows XP.

Click "Download the Plugin" to download Microsoft's validation plug-in. After it has downloaded, open it, and click "Run" if you get a security warning. Click "Next" until a window pops up telling you the installation has been completed.

Go back to the web page where you downloaded the plug-in. Scroll down and click the "Continue" button near the bottom of the page.

Click the "Download" button on the page that pops up. Windows Defender will be downloaded to your computer.

Double-click on Windows Defender to open it (and again click "Run" if you get a security warning). An Installation Wizard will pop up; follow the installation instructions in the Wizard and use all of the recommended settings.

Click "Finish" when the installation is complete to allow Windows Defender to begin scanning your computer for malicious software.
