How to Sew Using a Leather Awl

Sewing leather is nearly impossible without the right tools. You can sew it easily by using a leather awl, though. An awl is a sharp needlelike tool that pierces the leather, making it possible to pass thread or sinew through the holes. Unlike cutting holes in the leather, an awl pushes the leather fibers aside and thus doesn't weaken the material. There are also awls available that have eyelets to pass the thread though so you can sew as you pierce.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Linen thread or sinew
  • Needle
  • Beeswax block
  • Pencil
  1. Step 1

Mark the leather where you will be poking your holes. This ensures your stitches remain even. As you gain practice, you can skip this step.

  2. Step 2

Push the tip of the awl through the leather where you made your marks. Poke your holes two to four at a time.

  3. Step 3

Thread your needle with your thread or sinew. If using thread, draw it across the beeswax block, coating the thread thoroughly. Knot the end.

  4. Step 4

Sew through the holes, poking more as needed. Alternatively, do not use a needle but instead use the tip of the awl to push your thread through the holes.

Tips & Warnings
  • When sewing two pieces of leather together, pierce through both simultaneously so the holes line up.
  • An awl is sharp, so use caution when piercing with it.
