How to Choose the Right Type of Transmission Fluid

Experts recommend changing transmission fluid and filter every 2 to 3 years or every 24,000 to 36,000 miles. Choosing the wrong type of transmission fluid will cause transmission problems and damage.

1. Look in your car's owner's manual to find the type of transmission fluid for your car. Your car will take either Dextron or Mercon, the two types of transmission fluid.

2. Choose either synthetic or conventional transmission fluid. Synthetic fluid leads to higher performance in modern vehicles and is more durable at higher temperatures than conventional fluid. If your car is old, it might be best to use conventional fluid if you have never used synthetic in it.

3. Choose a brand of fluid. Mobil, Shell, and Pennzoil are top brands, but brand choice ultimately depends on personal preference.
