How to Fix a Friendship That Is Broken

A strong friendship is built on trust, honesty and respect. When these qualities are betrayed, a friendship can be lost. Friendships can be earned back through sincere efforts toward reconciliation, even if it's difficult.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine how much the relationship meant to you and how much it would mean to have it back. The most important element in repairing a broken relationship is sincerity. Make sure you're certain of your desire to be friends again before investing the time and effort in fixing the friendship.

    • 2

Allow some time to pass before attempting to reconcile. Both parties need time to gain perspective on the reasons for the relationship's deterioration. After some distance is gained, those reasons should seem less severe and the notion of reconciliation will be more welcome.

    • 3

Discuss the relationship with your mutual friends. Inquire as to how the other person is feeling and look for suggestions on how to move forward on repairing the friendship. Gaining a third, objective perspective on things can let you see the situation in a new light and help you discover the best way to move forward.

    • 4

Initiate contact. Taking the first step toward fixing the relationship demonstrates your sincerity in being friends again. Call, text or e-mail the other person to let her know how you're feeling and to gauge her stance on the situation.

    • 5

Be persistent, yet patient. Rebuilding a broken friendship requires time and effort. You must be consistent in your attempts at reconciliation while respecting the other person's needs for space. The relationship won't be fixed overnight, but if you're sincere in your efforts and exercise understanding for the other person's feelings you'll be on the path toward regaining the friendship.

Tips & Warnings

  • Listen to the other person in addition to expressing your feelings to her. Communication is key.

  • Don't hold onto any past resentments. You must let go of what's happened in order to move forward.
