Install a Honda Element Air Cabin Filter

Cabin air filters are what cleanse the air blowing into your Honda Element's passenger cabin through the HVAC vents and defrosters. They filter dust and dirt, keeping the inside of your car nice and clean. But they also filter out allergens, making the ride more comfortable for your allergy-prone passengers. How quickly they get clogged depends entirely on how dusty your driving environment is. But when they begin restricting air flow, you'll experience less power through your vents and you may even start smelling odd odors inside the car.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 replacement cabin air filters (according to model year)

Instructions

    • 1

Open the glove box on the passenger side and take everything out.

    • 2

Squeeze together the sides of the glove box door to disengage these stoppers from the tracks. The sides have plastic stoppers molded onto them which make the door glide smoothly during opening and hold the door in place when it's fully open. This you to drop the entire glove box assembly forward and down.

    • 3

Look in the cavity behind the glove box area. On the top right side, you'll see a large, black, plastic compartment with a little removable panel about the same size as one of your replacement filters. Remove this panel by pushing its plastic tab and lifting it off.

    • 4

Pull on the black plastic object hidden just behind this removable panel. This is the first filter. Once you pull it out most of the way, you may have to maneuver it around the dash assembly a little bit to get it the rest of the way out.

    • 5

Remove the second filter, which is located just to the right of where the first filter was. To do this, grab the left side of the right side filter (which should be visible through the opening) and slide it to the left so that it is in the same position as the left filter was. Then pull the filter out through the opening just like you removed the first one.

    • 6

Insert both of the new filters just like the old ones were arranged. Put one in first, slide it over to the right, then insert the second one. Replace the removable panel when both filters are in place.

    • 7

Put the glove box back in place by lifting it up, gently squeezing the sides together and pushing it all the way closed. Open and close it again just to make sure it's properly seated on its tracks.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you live in a very dusty, dirty or sandy area, such as on or near a gravel or dirt road, you will need to replace these filters much more frequently than if you stick to paved roads and highways.
