How to Display Artisan Bread

The smell of freshly baked artisan bread wafting from the oven is a great way to entice customers. Once you've drawn them to the bread display with the smell, you want them to stay to look over the various types of bread. The longer your customers linger, the more likely it is that they will make a purchase. It is important that you use the same care in displaying your artisan bread that you put into baking it. For starters, to keep the display looking fresh, replace the loaves daily.

Things You'll Need

  • Various artisan bread loaves
  • Wooden shelves (see tip)
  • Woven baskets (optional)
  • Antique or country-style cookware (optional)
  • Styrofoam blocks
  • Fabric or straw to cover Styrofoam

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a row of Styrofoam blocks at the back of the shelves. These will raise one end of some of the loaves, displaying them at an angle so your customers can see the whole loaf.

    • 2

Place fabric or straw over the Styrofoam blocks to completely cover them.

    • 3

If desired, add antique or country-style cookware or woven baskets on some of the shelves. These will add to the nostalgia that your customers will already be feeling when they smell the bread baking.

    • 4

Place the bread on the shelves by leaning one end of some of the loaves against the the covered Styrofoam blocks. This will put the loaf at an angle so that the top is fully visible. Put the rest of the loaves flat on the shelves in a haphazard fashion or neatly stack them, depending on your preference.

    • 5

Place several different types of bread in various places on the display shelves. You should have more than one shape. Possibilities include placing a long French baguette next to a round boule loaf. You can place a light-colored sourdough loaf beside a darker pumpernickel or rye bread. By combining colors and shapes, you will create a more visually appealing display.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use an unexpected color for your bread display shelf, and vary the colors, shapes and flavors of the loaves of bread you have on display. Make sure the color is complementary to the rest of your decor but also eye-catching so it attracts customers.
