How to Block Explicit Websites

Blocking explicit websites that have pornographic or vulgar content can be an excellent safety precaution. While protecting children, blocking such sites can also protect your computer from viruses and other Internet-transmitted dangers that could damage the internal functionality of your computer.

      Access your Internet Options and Settings in the Control Panel on your computer. Click on the Start menu on your computer's toolbar. Select the Control Panel tab on the Start menu drop box list. When the Control Panel opens, select Network and Internet, which can be found within the list of thumbnail links on your Control Panel's portal.

      Configure your Internet Options settings to create a higher level of security for your Internet browser. Click on the Internet Options link you will find in the Network and Internet folder. Adjust these settings to strengthen your browser's security to prohibit the access of certain Web sites. When the Internet Properties pop-up window appears, select the Security tab and adjust the security level by moving it upward toward the top of the pop-up window. Click OK at the bottom of the pop-up window to adjust these settings.

      Adjust your privacy settings. Click on the Site button listed on this page. You will see a list of blank data forms, designated for restricted sites. Enter any sites in particular that you would like to deny access to your Internet browser. Click Block after each site you enter and the site will be transferred to the table in the lower portion of the page. These sites will no longer be available for viewing on your Internet browser. Click OK to configure these settings.

      Configure your Internet browser's Parental Controls. When the Internet Options main pop-up window reappears, click on the Content tab. The Parental Controls tab will be the first command on this screen. Your User Control will appear and prompt you to confirm accessing this window. Your Control Panel will reappear with a list of options you can use to better secure your browser. Adjust these settings according to your preference.

      Enable your Content Advisor. In the Internet Options pop-up window, click on the Content tab once again and select Content Advisor, which should be listed under the Parental Controls settings. When the Content Advisor window opens, click Enable to allow the ratings of each site monitor whether it is safe or appropriate to be accessed. Last, click OK to apply these alterations to your browser.

  • Prohibiting certain sites can also assist you in blocking explicit sites without having to reconfigure your entire Internet browser's security settings. Monitor your Internet browser's history regularly. This can also allow you to maintain strong prohibition against explicit websites. Disable access to your Internet settings and computer's Control Panel. You will need to log in as the administrator of your computer and change these settings through your Control Panel. Try setting up a password to access your computer. This can also be an asset for protecting your computer and its users from explicit content.

  • Do not place your settings on extremely high security. You may end up blocking cookies and access to websites that may be essential to the functionality of your browser.
