How to Build a Sewing Table
A sewing table is a crucial part of any sewing room. Whether a large or small room, you can make a sewing table to accommodate any space. It will allow you to sew with greater ease, giving you a place to cut your fabrics and prepare your garments. Building one is fairly simple, too, and requires only a few adjustments to a basic sewing table.
Things You'll Need
- 2-inch thick plywood, cut to the length and width you would like
- 1 2-by-4 inch wood
- Sandpaper
- Wood paint or stain
- Drill
- Screws
- 1/4-inch thick corkboard
- Staple gun and staples
- Brown butcher paper to cover your table
Instructions

1
Decide on the size of your sewing table and buy a 2-inch thick piece of plywood about that size. Make sure the table does not overtake your room and allows you to still maneuver around your sewing room.
-
2
Measure from the floor to about your waist and cut a 2 by 4 into 4 pieces using this measurement; each piece should be equal in height. These will be your table legs. Change the length if you wish, as you will want a high table to minimize bending over the table.

3
Sand the edges of your plywood and table legs until they are smooth.
-
4
Screw the table legs into each corner of the plywood. You will now have a basic table shape.
-
5
Stain the legs of the table if you wish to have a more finished look.
-
6
Roll out the corkboard onto the plywood top and staple it down. The corkboard will allow you to pin into the table. Corkboard that is 1/4 inch thick will work well, but the thicker the corkboard, the more you will be able to pin into it.
-
7
Continue smoothing out the corkboard onto the table until the entire tabletop is covered.
-
8
Roll the butcher paper onto the table. Staple the edges of the paper under the table. Make sure the table is fully covered. Change out the butcher paper once a year to keep it smooth.
