Longboards are a lot different than normal-sized skateboards. These boards are around 46 inches long, compared to typical 32-inch skateboards. A longboard is usually designed to look more like a surfboard, and is used to emulate surf-style moves on asphalt. Longboards can be expensive, but with a little creativity, you can build your own long skateboard for only a few dollars.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bearings
  • Longboard wheels
  • Trucks
  • Plywood
  • Grip tape
  • Polyurethane sealer
  • Glue
  • Screwdriver
  • Sandpaper
  • Saw
  • Paint
  • Drill
  1. Step 1

Determine the size of your longboard. The board should be 46 inches, or longer.

  2. Step 2

Draw the shape of your longboard on a piece of cardboard or large sheet of paper. Most longboards are shaped and styled like a surfboard.

  3. Step 3

Place your pattern on a sheet of plywood that's 1/2 inch thick. Trace the design on the wood.

  4. Step 4

Drill holes in the sheet of plywood around the outside edge of the design.

  5. Step 5

Place a second piece of plywood on top of two kitchen chairs that are positioned at the center of the board. Your board needs to be slightly curved at the ends, and the chairs will help you achieve that curve.

  6. Step 6

Place the plywood with the holes on top of the plywood on the chairs. Evenly distribute weighted objects on both ends of the boards. Remove the weights when the plywood is sufficiently curved.

  7. Step 7

Remove the top board and cover the bottom board in glue. Place the top board back on. Use clamps to hold the boards in place until the glue dries.

  8. Step 8

Drive screws into both boards through the drilled holes. Don't drive the screws completely through the bottom board--just enough to keep the two boards together.

  9. Step 9

Let the glue dry for at least 24 hours, remove the screws and use a hand saw to cut along the pattern. Sand the board on both sides until it is smooth. Remove any dust with an old T-shirt or rag.

  10. Step 10

Coat the board in polyurethane sealer. Let it dry for 24 hours, then apply a coat of varnish or finish.

  11. Step 11

Drill holes for your skate trucks. Pop the bearings into the skate wheels and attach the wheels to the skateboard.

  12. Step 12

Apply grip tape to your longboard.
