Instructions

    • 1

Wash and remove any labels attached to your tin can. Draw a shape, such as a star or heart, on one side of the tin can. It should take up no more than 1/3 of the can.

    • 2

Hammer the nail into the center of the shape to make a hole and remove the nail. Use the hole to insert your tin snips and cut out the shape you drew.

    • 3

Use the nail and make a hole on either side of the can 1/2 inch down from the top. Cut a 10 inch length of wire. Insert each end into a hole and twist closed. Shape into a handle to carry the lantern with.

    • 4

Paint the outside of the tin can with enamel paint or leave plain depending on your decor. Allow to dry.

    • 5

Place the tea light into the can. You can secure it to the bottom with a small amount of melted wax to prevent it from sliding around.

Tips & Warnings

  • For less light, poke holes in the shape of your design with a nail instead of cutting it out. For a larger lantern, use a number 10 can and a small pillar candle.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Wear gloves when working with tin as the cut edges are sharp.
