1
Blend an eye primer on clean lids from lash line to browbone. After the primer absorbs, smooth an eyeshadow base on, also from lash line to browbone. Prepping your eyes is necessary even if you won't be applying eyeshadow; primer and base brighten up your eye area and help your colored eyeliner go on smoothly, as well as last longer and appear more vibrant against your skin. Dust translucent powder over your lids to set your primer and base.

Choose a shade of eyeliner that complements the color of your eyes. For example, brown eyes look stunning with blue eyeliner, green eyes are flattered by purple eyeliner, hazel eyes come alive with green eyeliner and blue eyes sparkle with brown or bronze eyeliner. Experiment with various eyeliner textures to find the one or ones you feel most comfortable working with. Your options include creme, stick, liquid and pencil eyeliners. If eye makeup smudging has been an issue for you in the past, use a waterproof formula.

Rim your eyes with the eyeliner you have selected. Make sure no skin is showing in between the eyeliner and your lash lines regardless of how thick or thin your eyeliner application is. Don't worry about how perfect or even your colored eyeliner is as you apply it. When you are finished laying the product down, use an eye smudge brush or cotton swab to smudge your eyeliner for a smoldering look. If you choose to wear a liquid eyeliner and you want it smoky, smudge it before it dries.

Make your eyeliner last longer throughout the day by dipping a small stiff angled brush in powder eyeshadow that matches the shade of your colored eyeliner; tap off excess product before stippling the eyeshadow over your colored eyeliner. This will set it in place. With the eye smudge brush or cotton swab, soften any hard lines in the eyeshadow.
