How to Sew a Throw Blanket by Hand

Sewing your own throw blanket is fairly simple, and can be done by anyone with a little hand-stitching experience, or even a beginner. A step up from no-sew fleece blankets, hand-stitched throws add a touch of class to your décor, while also remaining practical.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how much fabric you will need for your blanket. Measure the length and width of the finished product, then add seam allowances of 1/2 inch to each side. This is how long and wide you need your fabric pieces to be.

    • 2

Choose your blanket fabric. You will want something soft, but not stretchy, like a flannel or thick cotton or even fleece. Once you have found fabric that you like in a color that you like, choose a second complementary or contrasting color to go with it. Make sure that the bolt of fabric you choose is as wide and as long as you need, otherwise you will have to sew your blanket together in pieces.

    • 3

Lay your fabric on a flat surface, one color on top of the other with the right sides together. Smooth the fabric out so that there are no lumps, and line up the edges. Pin the edges of one piece of fabric to the edges of the other piece of fabric, leaving a small space of about 5 inches open on one of the sides.

    • 4

Thread your needle and knot the end, then run the thread through a small amount of thread wax so that it will push smoothly through both layers of fabric. Back stitch around all of the sides, except for the open 5 inches, 1/2 inch away from the edges. To back stitch, push the needle through both layers of fabric and then bring it back up to the top, then push the needle through again little ways back, slightly overlapping the stitches. Tie off the thread periodically instead of using one long piece of thread.

    • 5

Turn the fabric right side out, pulling it through the open 5-inch hole. Press all of the edges flat, and turn under 1/2 inch on each side of the hole and press that flat as well. Slip stitch the hole closed by picking one or two threads on the top layer with the needle and pulling through to the bottom layer. Tie off the thread and trim the loose ends.
