Weight lifting can help you tone up.

Many people want to have a nice physique and maintain their health. Achieving these goals takes dedication, time and, frequently, a gym routine. While just about anyone can join a gym, not everyone can establish a routine and stick to it. In order to maximize your results, take these steps to establish a gym routine.

How to Start a Gym Routine

  1. Step 1

Set fitness goals. This can easily be done by asking yourself a few questions. Do I want to lose weight? Do I want to bulk up? Do I want to tone up? How do I plan on achieving these goals? The answers to these questions will help you set your fitness goals and determine what kind of regimen you need to follow. If want to lose weight, focus on cardiovascular workouts, such as running on a treadmill or riding an exercise bike. If you want to bulk up, focus on weight training. Write down your goals and keep them nearby.

  2. Step 2

Find a location. Find a workout location that has the equipment you need and the amenities you desire, such as classes, child care, a sauna, a pool and personal trainers. Find a location that is convenient for you. The farther away the gym is, the less likely it is that you will go regularly. Visit various gyms and ask about rates. Many gyms offer new members discounts for joining and/or free personal training sessions.

  3. Step 3

Meet with a trainer. Discuss your fitness goals and work with him to establish a routine. The trainer will help you figure the specific exercises you should focus on and how often you should do them. If your gym membership doesn't include a free training session, you will have to shell out some money. You should also work with a trainer or a gym staff member to get familiar with the equipment to avoid injury.

  4. Step 4

Establish a schedule. If you're a morning person, opt to work out early in the day. If you're a night owl, go to the gym later. Once you decide when you are going to work out, record your schedule in your personal planner or PDA. Set reminders so you have that little extra push.

  5. Step 5

Put your plan into action. Go to the gym and work out at your designated times. Make it as convenient as possible. For example, if you are planning on going to the gym after work, bring your gym clothes with you to work. Don't make that extra trip back home, because if you do, you might decide to stay in for the evening.

Tips & Warnings
  • Find a gym buddy. Working out with a friend keeps you motivated and gives you a social outlet. If you live in an apartment or a condo, use the community gym. Working out there is convenient and saves you money.
