Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a non-life threatening digestive condition that causes an array of symptoms such as abdominal pain, flatulence, bloating and diarrhea. Oftentimes, people who suffer from IBS deal with occasional bouts of constipation. Although IBS doesn't damage the intestines or cause cancer, chronic constipation can cause extreme discomfort and impact a person's life. Fortunately, there are ways to treat constipation in IBS.

Instructions

    • 1

Increase your fiber intake. Eating a low-fiber diet can cause constipation. To relieve symptoms of constipation, increase your fiber intake and consume between 20 and 35 grams a day. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, or take a fiber supplement.

    • 2

To treat constipation caused by irritable bowel syndrome, drink between eight and ten glasses of water a day. Constipation develops when the colon absorbs too much water. In turn, stools become dry and hard. Drinking water can soften stools and relieve constipation.

    • 3

Exercise regularly. IBS sufferers who lead a sedentary life can develop constipation. To treat the condition, begin an exercise routine. Workout at least three times a week in 30 minute intervals. Exercise stimulates intestinal contractions, which can ease constipation and regulate bowel movements.

    • 4

Stay away from foods that cause constipation. Foods that can cause constipation in IBS sufferers include ice cream, cheese and processed foods. On the other hand, foods such as apples, cabbage, carrots and whole-grain cereals can prevent constipation.

    • 5

If you're unable to treat constipation with diet and exercise, take a laxative. Laxatives generally stimulate a bowel movement within 24 hours. Take medication as directed.

Tips & Warnings
