How to Paint Your Truck Camo

A camouflage paint scheme is great for your truck if you use it for hunting or just want a low-maintenance paint job. Dirt, dust and mud are hard to see through the camouflage design. With a little time and effort, you can give your truck its own custom camo look.

Things You'll Need

  • Sand paper, 120- and 200-grit
  • Primer
  • Sanding block
  • Masking tape
  • Masking paper
  • Paint, 3 or 4 different shades
  • Leaves, twigs and small branches

Instructions

    • 1

Apply masking paper and tape to every part of the truck that will not be painted, such as the windows, head lights, tail lights, tires, wheels and handles.

    • 2

Sand the truck using the sanding block and 120-grit sand paper. This removes the top layer of paint that's already on the truck.

    • 3

Lightly spray 3 or 4 coats of primer on the truck, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying a next one.

    • 4

Sand the entire truck again with the sanding block and 120-grit sand paper. Keep the sand paper wet while sanding. Rinse the truck when you are done and allow it to dry completely.

    • 5

Use large leaves, twigs and small branches for their patterns. Hold them against the truck with one hand and spray paint with the other. Repeat this over the entire truck with one paint color. Then add the other colors until the entire truck is painted. Overlap the patterns and painting until all of the primered areas are no longer showing through. Allow it to dry.

    • 6

Spray a clear coat over the entire truck. Use fewer coats for a dull finish and more coats for a glossy finish. Allow the truck to dry completely before removing the masking tape and paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear a mask when sanding or spraying paint and primer.

  • Never spray primer or paint onto a wet surface. This will cause bubbling under the paint.
