How to Make a Family Tree on Excel

Having a record of your family tree is very important for generations to come. It preserves your family history and allows you to trace back to your roots to learn more about who you are and where you come from. Learn how to create a family tree in Microsoft Excel.

      Open a new workbook in Microsoft Excel. Go to the "Insert" tab in the toolbar at the top of the screen.

      Click on the "SmartArt" button. A small window titled "Choose a SmartArt Graphic" will pop up.

      Click on the "Hierarchy" category and choose the "Hierarchy" design. Click on the "OK" button to insert the chart in the spreadsheet.

      Type each family member's name in the window that says "Type your text here" in each "[Text]" bullet point.

      Add additional boxes by pressing "Enter" after the bullet point you would like to add a box to and typing in the person's name. For example, Tom has three children: Mary, George and Ralph, but only two boxes appear with Mary's and George's names. Add Ralph by pressing "Enter" under the bullet point with Tom's name and typing "Ralph."

      Change the color of the family tree if you wish by going to the "Change Colors" menu in the "Design" tab and choosing a theme color.

      Change the size of the family tree by adjusting the corner handles. Save or print the family tree.
