Replace a Rear Tail Light

Tail light assemblies include reverse lamps, turn signal lamps and parking lamps. Before replacing a tail light, determine the type of light that you need. Rather than paying a mechanic to install the new lamp, consider doing the job yourself and save some money. It's a simple process as long as you have the right screwdriver.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a rear tail light designed for your vehicle. Know the make and model year of the car, and what type of light needs replacing.

    • 2

Open the trunk of a car (or tailgate of a truck) and find the retaining fasteners on the tail light assembly. Open the rear tail light assembly using the appropriate screwdriver. You may need a torx-head driver to loosen the retaining bolts in order to get to the base of the tail light lamp. Maneuver the tail light assembly out of its housing to access the lamp sockets.

    • 3

Twist the socket and pull it free from the collar. Remove the burnt-out light bulb from the socket by turning it counter clockwise. Hold the socket firmly while removing the lamp to avoid damaging the socket or the wires that supply it with power.

    • 4

Insert a new light bulb by turning it clockwise until it is secure. Test the lamp before you replace the assembly.

    • 5

Place the socket and tail light lamp into the assembly and turn the socket clockwise to tighten. Wipe down the back of the assembly and socket ends with a rag if there is any dirt or debris. Replace the retaining fasteners. Test the tail light again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply a thin layer of silicon gel around leaking tail light assemblies to help keep out moisture. Don't wait to get pulled over before replacing your burnt-out tail light.

  • Be careful not to separate a socket from the wiring by pulling it too firmly.
