There are millions of web servers in the world. The thing that makes it all work--so that you can find the server you are looking for when you want to visit a particular website--is the connection to the proper Domain Name Server (DNS).

When you buy a domain for your website it is hosted on a particular server. That server is identified whenever anyone types your domain name in a browser location bar. When you send email or visit a web page you use a domain name to do it. For example, http://www.ehow.com contains the domain name for eHow. If you send mail to someone at eHow, the mail would also contain the domain name: someone@ehow.com.

Here is how to provide your DNS information so that people can find YOU.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An Internet connection
  1. Step 1

Go to a domain registrar and purchase a new domain name for yourself. You can do this at places like register.com, GoDaddy.com, 1and1.com and many other sites. Before the domain can be found by anyone surfing the web, you have to let your domain registrar know what the DNS information from your web host is.

  2. Step 2

Secure hosting for your domain. Sign on with a web hosting company such as Go Daddy, Fat Cow, Pair or Blue Host. You will be given the name server information for your domain; it may be an IP number or it may be a server name.

  3. Step 3

Armed with your name server information, go back to the registrar and fill in the DNS information. Your domain is now findable on the Internet.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you decide you don't like the service from a web host and want to change to a different company, you must provide the domain registrar with the new DNS information. It may take about 24 hours for the change to be noticed all around the world.
