Gather your supplies. Before you start packing for the move, be sure you have enough boxes, tape and bubble wrap, old towels or packing peanuts for protecting box contents.
-
2
Plan what will be packed when. Rarely used items can be packed far in advance, but items you use daily, such as certain kitchen utensils, will need to be packed last. Make a list of each room in your home, and then create a schedule that will allow you to start packing well before it's time to leave your house without having to go too soon without things you'll need.

Use multicolored tape on packing boxes to differentiate the contents. Purchase packing tape in different colors for each room of the house. When you move, you'll know exactly where to place the boxes simply by looking at the color of the duct tape. Make a note of what color tape goes in what room so you don't forget.

Keep garbage bags handy when packing. Moving is a wonderful opportunity to get rid of things you no longer want or need. Have a bag for garbage and another for give-away items so you don't put anything into moving boxes that doesn't need to move with you.

Have paper plates and easy dinner fixings on hand. Once you pack away kitchen items, you won't be cooking. Buy an adequate supply of microwave dinners, sandwich fixings and other easy-to-prepare foods you don't need your cookware for.

Clearly mark boxes you'll need immediately when you arrive at your new home. Use a good marker, and make sure these boxes go into the truck last.
