Step 1
Wash
The first step in how to create soft waves in hair is to wash it. Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners are the best choice if you have wavey or curly hair, helping to keep it soft and smooth. When you put in the conditioner be sure and let it set on the hair for at least 5 minutes before rinsing. -
Step 2
Towel Dry
Put your head upside down and gently run your fingers through your hair. Now place your towel on your head and close your hair up in it. Twist up the towel with the hair inside and stand upright, letting the twisted towel rest on your head. You can tuck the end under the towel in the back of your head to keep it in place. OR you can get yourself one of those handy Turbie Twist towels. These make towel drying hair so much easier, especially for those of us with long hair. I love mine!
Allow your hair to dry in the towel for at least five minutes to soak up any excess water, decreasing drying time. -
Step 3
Finger Comb
Remove your hair from the towel and run your fingers through it. This will help to remove any tangles and make it smooth. Don't use a brush or comb. They will take out some of your natural wave and curl and cause your hair to pouf and possibly frizz, depending on your hair type. You need the natural body in your hair to help it hold it's shape once you start twisting. -
Step 4
Mousse
An important step in how to create soft waves in hair is to apply mousse. This will help the hair to hold it's shape and keep frizz at bay. Make sure to apply plenty of mousse throughout the hair. I use a mousse that's good for curly hair. -
Step 5
Twist
The way you create natural soft waves in hair is by twisting it. Take a section of hair and twist it from root to end. The smaller the section the more wavey your hair will be. I do mine in 1-2 inch sections. Once you finish sectioning and twisting all your hair let it air dry. Keep an eye on it and if any section looks like it is untwisting, go ahead and twist it up again. If your hair starts to dry before you twist, mist
it with water, then twist it. -
Step 6
Dry
The last step in how to create soft waves in hair is to let your hair air dry. To speed up drying time you can use a hair dryer with a diffuser on low speed. Once your hair is dry, gently run your fingers through the sections to make it untwist and separate. You have now created soft pretty waves in your hair. Enjoy!
