Whether you're baking for a birthday, an anniversary or a wedding--the cake becomes an event in itself! Only thing is, decorating a cake can be a very daunting task if you are not a master baker. And it's quite in fashion these days to have a homemade cake. But did you know that's it's surprisingly easy to get a chic bakery look at home? Even if you choose to have the cake baked for you and iced with a fondant or other icing, you can still personalize it yourself--and often at a big savings! Overdone cakes are a thing of the past--chic, elegant and simple is the way to go these days. Here is how to create your own "bakery" cake at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cake
  • Ribbon or trim in the colors of your event.
  • Flowers (larger, heartier blooms are best)
  1. Step 1

Bake your cake. It can be a single layer or a 3 tier. I am partial to square cakes, but round and oval are also very nice.

  2. Step 2

Buy a thin ribbon or trim and place it at the base of each layer.

  3. Step 3

If you are placing flowers on the cake, do this at the last moment, so that they are fresh. Flowers look best cascading down one side. Starting on the top, place a grouping of blooms for the "crown" of the cake, then cascade them down the side or center of the cake at an angle.

Tips & Warnings
  • I love the look of fresh flowers on a cake. I used Japanese Magnolia blossoms picked from the backyard on the cake pictured above!
  • You may wish to have a few variations of ribbon or trim on hand. I used three different silver ribbons on my cake.
