Twitter is sweeping the Internet. It has grown over 1,000 percent in participation in 2008 and shows no signs of slowing down. Here are some applications and websites that will help you get more out of Twitter.

From Quick Guide: Social Networking Know-How
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An Internet connection
  • A Twitter account
  1. Step 1

You can use Twitter in a browser by going to twitter.com. This is a perfectly good way to watch Twitter, and contains search features and easy links to other people's profiles where you can click "Follow" to keep up with them.

  2. Step 2

Many people prefer to use smaller desktop applications to watch Twitter on their computer, so they don't have to devote a browser screen to it all the time. Two very popular ones are Twhirl and Tweetdeck. With these installed on your computer, you can move Twitter off into a smaller space and only use it when you have the time.

  3. Step 3

Twitter applications are also available for Smartphones and iPhones. Twitterrific is a good example of a phone app.

  4. Step 4

Once you have your Twitter app installed and working, you need to find ways to locate the people you want to follow.

  5. Step 5

Twitter Grader is particularly helpful in finding people in your geographic area. (The user's location must be given in their Twitter profile for Twitter grader to work.) If you want to establish a local network on Twitter users, find people to follow quickly using Twitter Grader.

  6. Step 6

A small suite of apps called Tweet FX will help you do things like create a badge for your blog or website to advertise your Twitter name or to post tweets.

  7. Step 7

If you want to display a Twitter conversation on your blog, a good tool for that is Twickie.

  8. Step 8

For following events on Twitter, you can visit hashtags.org and search on the event. You can also follow events with Tinker. Tinker will follow event streams from both Twitter and Facebook.
