This article shows you how to set a right-align tab in MS Word. Align text to the right tab in my document.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Display Ruler
    Display Ruler

Make sure the ruler is visible.

<-<-<- From the View menu, select Ruler (it should be checkmarked).

This places the ruler at the top of your Microsoft Word document.

In this example, we’ll use a right-align tab near the left side of the page. Let’s choose 5.5 inches for a tab.

  2. Step 2
    Select Tab Location
    Select Tab Location

<-<-<- On the ruler, Click Once on the 5½ inch tick-line marking.

By default, a left-align tab appears at the point where you single-click on the ruler.

  3. Step 3
    Set Tab Alignment

<-<-<- Double-click on the tab (L) mark itself to select what type of alignment you want.

Wehn you double-click on the tab, a Tabs setting box appears, as shown in Step 4.

  4. Step 4

    Notice the alignment option buttons.

<-<-<- To set a tab position at 5.5, make sure 5.5 is selected (highlighted), and choose the ‘Right’ option button.

**Make sure you click the Set button afterward to lock in your right tab selection.

  5. Step 5
    Right aligned text

Notice that your ruler now shows a backward-facing L, indicating that this particular tab is right-aligned.

When you tab over to the 5.5 setting and start typing, all your text will fill in from right to left.

The example shown in step 6 uses a right-align tab for the date and student information on a test document.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tip: to remove tab settings on the ruler, use your mouse to simply drag the tab (L) off the ruler.
