How to Use an Inflatable Kayak

Inflatable kayaks are easy to transport and easy to store. However, they do require a little more attention than a standard kayak simply because they are easier to damage. While over inflating once or allowing sand and rocks to scrape the bottom won't immediately wreck your kayak, over time it can cause damage which is why it's important to know how to use your inflatable kayak.

Instructions

  1. Setting up your kayak.

    • 1

Set up your gear before you inflate the kayak. Make sure that you are changed and ready to get in the water as soon as the kayak is inflated. Exposure to both sun and sand could damage your inflatable kayak.

    • 2

Inflate the kayak. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for inflating, for instance, if you need to install seats and footrests first then do so. Then set up the air pump and use it to inflate the kayak.

    • 3

Check to see if it's properly inflated. Use your air gauge to make sure that your kayak is properly inflated. Check the manufacturer's instructions to see what the recommended air pressure is for your kayak. If you don't have a gauge you can test the pressure by feeling the kayak. Simply slap the side of the kayak. It should feel firm and make a sound like a drum.

Launch the kayak in shallow water. Now that your kayak is fully inflated, carry the kayak out into the water until about knee deep where it is safe to launch. If the water is too shallow you risk damaging the bottom of the kayak with rocks and other beach debris.

Landing Your Kayak and Cleaning It

Land the kayak in knee deep water. As soon as the water gets to knee deep, jump out of the kayak and lift it up so it doesn't get damaged.

    • 6

Deflate the kayak. To deflate, simply remove the Boston air vale cap and let the air out.

    • 7

Clean the kayak. You will need to clean the kayak, especially if you have been kayaking in salt water. Rinse the kayak wish fresh water and clean any scum or sunscreen off with some mild soap. Make sure when you wet the kayak that the air valves are closed so that water doesn't get inside the kayak. To dry the kayak, use an old towel.

Store the kayak. Once the kayak is dry, roll it up by folding the kayak's sides in towards the center until the kayak is small enough to fit in the bag it came in. Then simply store the kayak in a cool dry place until the next time you decide to take it out.
