How to Play Left Handed Guitars

Because of left-handed guitars, it is possible for lefties to learn to play the guitar exactly the same way a right-handed person learns to play. A left-handed person can learn to play a right-handed guitar, but if he or she wants to play that guitar left handed, the strings will be upside down, which will make learning notes and chords more challenging. Though the guitar market is skewed toward right-handed players, quality left-handed guitars are available and will make playing much simpler for someone who is left handed.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit on a stool or in a chair with no arms. You will need space for the width of the guitar, plus plenty of room to maneuver your arms in order to play.

    • 2

Hold the guitar with your right hand on the neck and the pick in your left hand. The strings on a left-handed guitar are reversed, so the thickest string will be at the top and the thinnest at the bottom, just like a right-handed guitar.

    • 3

Rest the body of the guitar on your left thigh and hold the guitar near your body. Guitars have a curve to them that is a perfect resting place. Keeping your guitar close to your body will make it easier to finger the notes and chords than if you keep it at a distance.

    • 4

Finger the notes or chords with your right hand. Since a left-handed guitar is made as a mirror image of a right-handed one, notes and chords are fingered exactly the same way on both. Press the string down firmly against each fret.

    • 5

Strum the strings with your left hand. Holding the pick firmly between your thumb and index finger, pull it down the strings, making sure to hit every string.
