Garters are a fun accessory for any occasion, but can definitely accent a special occasion such as homecoming, prom or a date. They are simple to create, and you can apply your creativity to them by applying a homecoming or dance event theme, such as your school colors or initials. Create a whole batch of homecoming garters for a cheerleading squad, group of friends or club to wear under your homecoming dresses for fun.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric (measured size as 1 1/2 times the size of the leg and 3 inches wide)
  • Elastic Band, 1/2 inch wide
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Needle and Thread
  • Lace (measure size as 1 1/2 times the size of leg and 3 inches wide)
  • Embellishments or Patches (to apply to the garter)
  1. Step 1

Choose a fabric that most represents your school style and spirit. Use fabric that represents your school colors, such as blue and gold, green and silver, etc. You can also apply your initials in patches, as you would with a letter jacket. Contrast the colors by using one color for the lace and another for the elastic band fabric.

  2. Step 2

Create the fabric that will lay over the elastic band. This will resemble a tube that will be sewn over the band. Lay the strip of fabric out and sew the two long edges together on the wrong side out so you can turn it inside out and the seam will be hidden. Turn the tube inside out once you have completed the sewing.

  3. Step 3

Slide the tube over the elastic band. It is okay if the fabric is longer than necessary, as you can trim it to size. Hold the edges together and put it on the desired spot of your leg to make sure it fits. Trim it to size if necessary.

  4. Step 4

Sew the elastic band together once you are comfortable with the way the homecoming garter fits. Take it off of your leg, and sew the lace onto the bottom of the elastic band so it creates a skirt-like effect. Next, sew a strip of lace half the size of the bottom lace to the top of the elastic band to create lace all around the goth garter.

  5. Step 5

Add patches or decorations to the fabric covering the elastic band, such as little ribbon loops, patches of sports images such as footballs, soccer balls, etc. You can also accent the homecoming garter with objects such as beads and jewels in your school's colors.

  6. Step 6

Slip it onto your leg once complete to make sure it fits comfortably and none of the decorations poke you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to have the correct measurements of your leg where you want the goth garter so you can get the proper sized fabric.
