How to Hit a Golf Ball With an Iron
Swinging an iron in golf is not like swinging a driver. If you do hit your iron shots like you're hitting off of a tee, you're liable to be fishing your ball out of water. Learning how to make consistent contact on your iron shots can trim a few strokes from each round of golf that you play.

1
Compress the ball when you hit it. The key to a successful iron shot is hitting the ball down, compressing it between the ground and the iron's club face. Failure to accomplish this reduces the distance control you have and leads to flat iron shots.

2
Hit the ball before your iron hits the ground. Practice this by placing several tees in a row on the ground and making divots on your swing in front (toward the target) of the tees. When you can consistently do this, you will be compressing the ball properly on your iron shots.

3
Sit on your shot. Many golfers tend to raise up on their downswing when using irons. Work on keeping your body down by making a slight sitting move as you start your downswing and then drive through the ball.

4
Practice getting the correct extension. Often, golfers are concerned with getting loft on an iron shot and allow the club head to get out of position in front of the hands. Correct this by hitting irons and stopping the follow-through below your waist. You'll soon get a feel for the proper extension on an iron shot.

Keep your head out of the way of your swing. Keeping your head down often leads to a bad iron shot because it limits how your body can turn. Practice keeping your head and spine straight on an iron shot to reduce the chances of slicing the ball.
