Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disorder that affects children and adults. This condition causes intestinal inflammation, and the most common symptom is diarrhea. Medications are available to treat ulcerative colitis. However, some people prefer natural treatments. Whether you're dealing with a mild or severe case of ulcerative colitis, there are ways to treat the condition - naturally.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stay away from dairy. Milk, cheese and other dairy foods contain lactose. People who suffer from ulcerative colitis are generally unable to digest lactose, and this ingredient tends to worsen symptoms. Limit your intake of dairy products to stop diarrhea and gas.

  2. Step 2

Limit your intake of high-fiber foods. Fiber is an essential nutrient, and it contributes to digestive health. However, too much fiber can aggravate the symptoms of ulcerative colitis and worsen diarrhea. These may include apples, cabbage, cauliflower and carrots.

  3. Step 3

Recognize foods that trigger symptoms. Problem foods vary by person, and sufferers have to pinpoint foods that trigger their symptoms. Common problem foods include citrus foods, spicy foods, alcohol, chocolate and caffeine.

  4. Step 4

Drink plenty of water. Persistent diarrhea can result in dehydration. Drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day to replenish your body and maintain a healthy digestive tract.

  5. Step 5

Learn how to control stress. Stress doesn't cause ulcerative colitis, but it can trigger symptoms. To ease stress and anxiety, practice breathing exercises, take an herbal mood supplement, exercise or relax tense muscles with a massage.
