How to Install a Firewall to a Wireless Router
Wireless networking can be a convenient way to connect to the Internet which allows for mobility within a localized area without the worry of tripping over Ethernet cables. One problem with wireless networking is that the Internet connection can be less secure than wired connections. One step a user can take to protect himself is to use the firewall installed on his wireless router. A router's firewall is not something that can be directly installed by the user; rather wireless routers come with a firewall already installed. It is important to note: the firewall must be configured and enabled by logging into the router's administrative tools.

1
Determine the IP address of your Router. The IP adress is the number which must be used to log into the router's administrative center. If you no longer have your router's manual, click "Start," "Run," type "Command," and press "OK." In the DOS window type "ipconfig" and write down the IP address listed under "Default Gateway." This should be your router's IP address. Common IP addresses are "192.168.1.1" and "192.168.0.1".

2
Open a Web browser and enter the router's IP address into the address bar.

3
Enter your router's user name and password into the pop-up prompt to log into your router's administrative area.

Tips & Warnings
You can add another layer of security by running your own firewall on your computer, such as Windows firewall, or a firewall component of an antivirus program like Norton Firewall or McAfee firewall.
A firewall should not take the place of an antivirus program. Always use antivirus when connected to the Internet.
