Step 1
Do not respond to email requests for personal information, including your full name, address, and bank account numbers. If the email appears to be from your bank, call to verify that the request is legitimate. Most banks won’t solicit this information from you via email.
-
Step 2
Do not send any money or personal information to strangers who offer you an unsolicited investment opportunity.
-
Step 3
Don’t open attachments from email senders you do not know, even if they appear to be from a legitimate company.
-
Step 4
Do not respond to requests from companies you are not affiliated with. Paypal, Google, Amazon, and eBay will not send you information if you have not signed up for an account with them.
-
Step 5
Do not respond to messages claiming you’ve won a sweepstakes or lottery that you did not enter.
-
Step 6
Do not click on pop-up ads that claim to offer you fast cash and prizes. Although some may be legitimate, more often than not, they are scams.
-
Step 7
Do not accept offers for online jobs that require you to pay a fee up front. Legitimate companies will not make you pay for work.
-
Step 8
Remember the old adage: If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Although you can make money working from home on the Internet, the odds of finding a system to “get rich quick” are slim.
-
Step 9
Examine URLs (website addresses) before you go to them. To see the address of a link, hover over it with your mouse. The address will appear in the bottom left corner of your browser. Simply clicking on a site can infect your computer with spyware that can collect your personal information.
